Footballers in the World Cup, athletes in the Games, tennis players at Wimbledon…. What’s all this coloured tape they’re displaying, is it for the look, is it a placebo or is it actually doing something? Well let me give you some information on what it’s up to and the background.…


For more than 25 years, Kinesio Taping has been breaking new ground in the fields of sports performance, pain management and physical therapy.


The Kinesio Taping Method is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while allowing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion. It is used to successfully treat a variety of orthopaedic, neuromuscular, neurological and medical conditions. Both Kinesio® Tex Tape and the training protocol have shown results that would have been unheard of using older methods and materials.


In the mid-1970s, Dr. Kenzo Kase was already a well-known Japanese practitioner licensed in chiropractic and acupuncture. He developed the tape, which has a texture and elasticity very close to living human skin, in response to limitations he encountered working with rigid sports taping methods on his own patients.


Dr. Kase was experienced with both Japanese and US norms for patient treatment. He began to have questions about the limitations of the Western medical mindset. He heard of a cryotherapy treatment for arthritis that utilized tape to adjust joint distortion. In Western medicine the presumption had been that once a joint is in a certain shape that cannot be changed. He was intrigued by the possibilities that this treatment could remediate the distortion.


He developed the tape, which has a texture and elasticity very close to living human tissue, in response to limitations he encountered working with rigid sports taping methods on his own patients.


To develop such a modality, he ordered supplies of the different athletic tapes that were available at that time. None of them gave him the results he was looking for. By trial and error, he realized that the source of the complaint was actually in the muscle, not in the joint or in the bone. To stabilize the joint he saw that it was more effective to tape around the muscle to achieve joint correction. The tapes that he was able to obtain were rigid, designed to immobilize the joint.


In cases of injury or overuse, the muscle loses its elasticity. Dr. Kase needed to develop a tape that would have the same elasticity as healthy human muscle. He knew from his practice that the tape would also need to stay on the skin where it was applied. He spent two years doing a lot of research relating to elasticity, adhesives and breathability.


Finally, he came up with a tape that possessed the proper degree of elasticity, and that lifts the skin microscopically. From that beginning, Kinesio® Tex Tape was invented. Its unique properties were based on a study of kinesiology.


Kinesio® Tex Tape is used to:

Dr. Kase continues to work closely with Kinesio® distributors throughout the world as well as with Kinesio Taping® Association International (KTAI) and its members. Kinesio® UK and KTAI continue to maintain Dr. Kase’s high standards of care and to track new and increasingly effective uses for the taping method.


Does it work? Well if correctly trained, correct assessment made, correctly and specifically applied and the correct tape used then ‘Yes’ it does!

Simply sitting for long periods can result in feelings of tightness in the hamstrings which are two-joint muscles, extending the hip and flexing the knee (they also assist in the rotation of the hip and knee) so whilst the muscles are lengthened over the posterior hip in sitting, they are shortened where they cross the posterior knee. Less active or older clients may also have shortened hamstrings and may experience ‘tightness’ when attempting activities that require both hip flexion with knee extension, such as bending down to put socks and shoes on. This may be the result of client’s standing with slightly flexed knees, a common postural change as we age.


Active and sports people regularly come in with the feelings of tightness in those muscles primarily used in their sport that require strong knee flexion. For example, gym goers, cyclists, rowers and runners, are all at risk of developing ‘tight’ hamstrings, as all activities lend to a tendency for this muscle group to shorten in this way.


In nearly all cases we see, we are able over a course of sessions assist in returning hamstrings to normal function using advanced massage and neuromuscular techniques. Often we have to integrate treating other muscle groups and areas to bring balance to the whole limb and associated body areas to achieve improved body function.

The boom in fitness and sport in the last 10 years has been truly remarkable. Cycling’s growth has seen no bounds too and with it, the number of injuries that occur and we then get to see at the clinic. It’s probably no wonder given that there’s a slightly asymmetrical being attached to a pretty symmetrical object moving with some velocity on the vagaries of UK roads!. The chances are at some point something is going to complain, give in or go wrong. So while cycling is a great non-load bearing exercise for the body, the proper setup of the bike with all of its many variables is essential to correctly fit that particular individual clinging upon it. Getting this done accurately and knowing the many areas affecting our attachment to our cycles takes a good deal of mathematics and understanding.


Sorting out the bike setup will resolve many issues and problems of comfort, ease and performance, which are more evident, visible and measureable, i.e. correct handlebar adjustment, size of frame, saddle position and height. The more difficult and less immediately resolved issues are related to the person attached. Pain, aches, inflexibility, body structures out of alignment and imbalance of muscles are the main things we see and deal with when looking at injuries from bike riding and not just those that have occurred from the occasional falling off. Though sometimes inconsequential some of these involuntary dismounts might result in an unexpected change, such as a forearm pain or hamstring tightening up for seemingly no apparent reason.


As cyclist ourselves and seeing a significant number of riders through our doors, we have good insight and understanding of how a small change that can occur leads to a big impact on the body and its overall performance. As such these can make a huge difference to just things like comfort and ability to cover those longer distances.


Knee problems are one of the most common injuries suffered by cyclists and perhaps no wonder given on average we repeatedly push those pedals round 4000 revolutions an hour. Cleats that are incorrectly positioned or poor set-up of saddle height and distance can cause imbalance and aggravate the tissues in the hip, leg, ankle or knee quite easily. Some of these issues may build gradually over time, whilst others may become evident fairly quickly. Often in assessing, treating and asking questions we can find out what’s happening with you and what you're doing on the bike.


The common causes of injury or niggles tend to come from the bike setup, faulty biomechanics, postural issues, inflexibility or asymmetry in body alignment and falling off with the resultant minor or major conditions that might occur.


Have your bike correctly fitted by a recognised fitter and keep a record of saddle height and position, handle bar alignment and where the hoods sit best etc. It’s surprising how quickly these may vary over time, use and heavy riding thus putting the bike and you out of alignment and causing a problem. Improving your ability and performance may require a change in components or setup, so you should have these rechecked and your bike serviced regularly to maintain the optimum riding position for you.

Should a pain or injury occur and to help in resolving issue, it’s worth making a note of when the pain came on and how long it lasted or reoccurred and anything that helps ease it temporarily. This knowledge helps us understand and resolve the problem more quickly and effectively.


Problems don’t usually get, resolved by themselves and even if they ease, continuing to ride daily or train hard for an event, as the miles start to build up, the niggles may do too. We see many of our cycle clients not only to resolve these issues but like their bikes they come for regular maintenance to prevent them from occurring in the first place and keep them in good condition to be able to achieve what they want from cycling. Along with regular treatment sessions, committing to better flexibility and building up your core is a key element to countering the sitting at the work desk or laptop and then asking the base of your back cope and your body to lean over the handlebars for miles. No amount of tinkering with the bike setup or oiling the chain will help fix this.
